The Historical Tale of Botox

Saturday, August 29th, 2009
Wain Roy recently asked:

Botox, the wonder drug, was discovered accidentally by a German doctor, Justinus Kerner, in the 1820s. He began experimenting with botulinum toxin-a protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum, producing botulism- a fatal form of food poisoning. Kerner desired to take advantage of the bacteria’s muscle weakening qualities for medical use. His experimentation deduced that botulinum could be effectively used for relieving muscle spasms by blocking acetylcholine release, a neurotransmitter that directs muscles when to contract.

Taking cue from this discovery, Alistair and Jean Carruthers, a dermatologist and an ophthalmologist initiated treating their patients with botox injections for curing muscular disorders of the eye. The result was encouraging. However, history was created when one of her assistants advised her to inject the toxin in her freckled region between the eyebrows. The effect was simply spectacular!

Initially, people were apprehensive about the workings of botox. But it needs to be understood that botox works in the same way as other drugs. One is injecting a product of botulism bacterium very much like penicillin, derived from mold, being administered into the body. In fact, almost all the antibiotics have their origin in micro organisms, and botox is no different.

The US Food and Administrative Department gave botox the first green signal in 1989 for treating crossed eyes and Blepharospams (incontrollable blinking). In 2000 and 2002, the toxin was approved for cervical dystonia (neurological movement disorder) and for reduction of the frown lines respectively. From then on, the renown of botox as a miracle wonder defying the signs of age began to spread far and wide. Initially used as a single cosmetic procedure, doctors have now begun using botox to reduce wrinkles in other facial areas like laugh lines, crow’s feet around the eyes, etc. Injected in little quantities, botox relaxes the muscles by putting a break on the release of acetylcholine from the nerve endings. A single botox treatment includes around twenty doses of injections on the affected site. Once administered, botox spreads no more than a quarter-inch, which doctors believe, are safe enough for the body.

Cosmetic treatment using botox are now being offered by most of the leading clinics across US and the UK. However, London is known to house world-class beauty clinics offering botox treatment. Botox London can be safely relied on for its superior quality and high effectiveness. The effect of a single treatment easily lasts to six months, after which you need to undergo the procedure once again. In London botox treatment can cost anywhere between £200 and £400, depending on the number of areas to be treated. Nevertheless, when beauty is desirous, the cost does not matter!

Where Can You Find A Good Botox Doctor in Sydney

How to find a good botox doctor

The best way to start your search for a botox doctor is to ask around. Ask anyone you trust (friends, family, co-workers) for recommendations. Next, use the Yellow Pages and the Internet to compile a list of both those who were recommended and any other cosmetic surgeons working in your area. Generally, cosmetic surgeons offer botox injections, while regular physicians do not.

Come up with a list of questions—make the list as comprehensive as possible as you can use it not only to inform yourself about the procedure, but also to gauge the experience, knowledge, and attitude of the doctor you might be dealing with. Ask what botox is, how effective the procedure is, and what the possible side effects might be. You should be especially inquisitive about the effects of the procedure, as there might be dangers involved. It is important that you know all of the possible outcomes before committing. Check the FDA website and compare their statements with the answers your doctor provides to make sure he or she is being completely honest and up front with you.

Do not forget to request evidence, such as testimonials or photographs, of their work. It is very important that you know your surgeon’s history, including past mishaps or dissatisfied customers. You should definitely find out what your doctor’s training, education, and credentials are; and how extensive her or his experience is. If you have a specific doctor in mind, try asking people you know whether they have heard anything about her or him, or research his or her name on the web.

Once you have picked a doctor, work with her or him to come up with a long-term plan, since the results not only vary among patients, but are also temporary. Also talk to your doctor about possible payment plans. The cost of a botox procedure can range from $125-$400, depending on the type of treatment. If you know other people who are also interested in botox, you might consider hosting a Botox Party. Since Parties come in bulk, the price per person may be lower, while the quality will remain high.

Dr. Christopher T. Chia recently asked:

Anti aging Botox treatment helps to reduce the fine lines and wrinkles on your face, thus safeguarding your youthful appearance. This is an effective non surgical treatment procedure approved by the FDA.

Botox – the Right Cosmetic Procedure

Botox is the purified form of botulinum toxin type A. The anti aging Botox treatment is carried out by providing minute dosages of Botox injections into particular muscles. Botox injections avoid contractions of the muscles that create frown lines and wrinkles. By conditionally stopping the muscle contractions, the natural and smooth appearance of the skin can be preserved. The number of injections required for the treatment may vary from one patient to another. The areas that can be treated by the Botox treatment include:

• Glabellar lines

• Crow’s feet

• Forehead lines

• Lines and wrinkles around the lips

• Neck bands

Cosmetic Procedure with Minimum Downtime

After the treatment, the patients can return to their daily activities within a short time. It is however, necessary to avoid heavy exercises, lifting heavy weights and massages around the treated area on the particular day. It is because these activities can stop the process of protein creation and affect the natural results of the treatment.

Cosmetic Treatment without Major Side-effects

Botox anti aging treatment is extremely effective as it can diminish even deep-set wrinkles within a short time. The normal treatment duration is about ten to thirty minutes. The direct results of the treatment can be experienced within one or two weeks and the effects will remain for 3 to 4 months. This largely depends on the treated area, nature of the muscles and many more. In order to preserve a natural and youthful look it is essential to undertake three or four treatments each year.

Although Botox is considered a safe treatment procedure, it might cause minor discomforts and side effects. These include sensation of pain in the injected area, headache, nausea, minor swelling, bruising and redness.

It is best to approach an experienced doctor for anti aging Botox treatment. This enables to avoid any possible complication or risk.
